Fatherhood Friday: An important holiday!

READER'S WARNING: I'm pretty sure I don't have a following of children reading my blog, but if you have nosy little ones peering over your shoulder while you catch up on blog reading, you may want to send them in the other room while you read this post.

I don't want to be responsible for having your child ask "what's a BJ?" (and I'm not talking about the yellow dinosaur on Barney and Friends)

STEAK AND BJ DAY

Here's the story...taken from an email I received several years back. You can read about the start of this holiday in the Urban Dictionary.

"You know the drill. Every 14th of February you get the chance to display your fondness for a significant other by showering her with gifts, flowers, dinner, shows and any other baubles that women find romantic. Every Valentines day you rack your brains for that one special, unique gift that will show your wife or girlfriend that you really do care for them more than any other. Now ladies, I'll let you in on a little secret; guys really don't enjoy this that much. Sure seeing that smile on your face when we get it right is priceless, but that smile is the result of weeks of blood, sweat and consideration. Another secret; guys feel left out. That's right, there's no special holiday for the ladies to show their appreciation for the men in their life. Men as a whole are either too proud or too embarrassed to admit it.

Which is why a new holiday has been created.

March 14th is now officially "Steak and BJ Day." Simple, effective and self-explanatory, this holiday has been created so you finally have a day to show your man how much you care for him.

No cards, no flowers, no special nights on the town; the name of the holiday explains it all, just a steak and a BJ. That's it. Finally, this twin pair of Valentine's Day and Steak and BJ Day will usher in a new age of love as men everywhere try THAT much harder in February to ensure a memorable March 14th!

The word is already beginning to spread, but as with any new idea, it needs a little push to start the ball rolling. So spread the word, and help bring love and peace to this crazy world. And, of course, steak and BJ's."

Now if we can just get the federal government to recognize this so that we can get the day off and REALLY enjoy it! :)

This date should be circled on every woman's calendar. Unfortunately, I do not believe it is duly recognized in the Daddy Files household. :(

@ Super Mega Dad - Hey, it's on a Saturday this year...I think that's as good as it's going to get. :)

@ Daddy Files - After reading the baptism post, you have bigger things on your plate to worry about. ;)

@ ciara - Amen sista! I'm not one for Valentine's Day, but any other day of reciprocation would work.

@ Jason - That's why I'm spreading the word - to make sure everyone is informed.

Hmm, I was told that this is how to celebrate birthdays. Now it's a March thing too? Very interesting...

Wow, you straight couples are WAY WAY behind the times.
We've been having that for long time.

hopefully my husband doesn't know this 'holiday' exists ;)

Isabella, you are hereby crowned the official spokeswoman for Steak and BJ Day. Now go forth and educate the masses. :P

I think the problem is that Hallmark will never support it. If somehow we could get their support then we would have something.

I'm in. . .but while I could take care of the former, the latter is up to my wonderful wife. At least until I get that rib removed.

Don't see a lot of mainstream merchandising opportunities here, but I'm in.

"Oh, sweetie, did you know what tomorrow is?"

This is the best idea I have ever heard. You are truly a visionary.

Man, you guys are funny...

@ Call Me Cate - Hmm...interesting for sure. I'd make him pick - birthday or March 14th. If I was a guy, I'd choose the day in March because you get all kinds of other love (phone calls, emails, gifts) on your birthday. This way an arbitrary day gets special significance.

@ Andrew's Daddies - LOL. Aren't we always behind on the times? :)

@ Katie - Haha...just don't show him this blog and I think you're good to go.

@ peteej - LOL. While I appreciate the nomination, I believe in more of a viral campaign for this holiday. Everyone is responsible in their own way of spreading the word...and the um, love.

@ John - Hahaha. That holiday involves a pole, too...no?

@ Otter Thomas - Cards? When does a guy want a card?! Hallmark has no chance.

@ New-Dad-Blog - LOL. Sounds great in theory, but really think about what you'd be subjecting yourself too - you're wife would just shrug at your request and say, "eh...why don't you take care of yourself?"

The wife is supposed to cook the steak - though, if my husband wants a perfectly cooked piece of cow (and not a piece of charcoal on a plate), he'll know to make it himself. :)

@ KWG - just show her the websites...it's on the internet, it's got to be real, right? ;)

@ Big Papa - Yes, I will be forever immortalized as the woman who brought "Steak and BJ Day" to the masses. I'll be listed right next to what's-his-name that invented nylons. The women will LOVE me!

What if you're a vegitarian? Tofu and BJ just doesn't have the same appeal. Thank goodness, eating meat has never been a problem for me. Geez oh Pete! Hutch

I hate cards. I was implying that Hallmark has forced all the bad hollidays like Valentines Day on us. I just figured their approval was necessary.

Uh Huh, shoot, that holiday exists here...every week...every month, every, well, er, um, ahem, you get the idea ;-)

I love the sound of this holiday, I am going to let the wife know ASAP. LOL. I am sure she can't wait to celebrate this day with me.

Busy-Dad-E said...

You could also call it Filet-tio Day.

My wife must already know about this holiday. When I got home last, she showed me two porterhouse steaks that she bought. Mr. Man can't wait to get to grillin' tomorrow. ;-)

Isabella said...

@ Mommy With a Penis - Hmm...I guess you could do veggie burgers instead. That still sounds manly, right?
Geez oh pete is pretty catchy, no? I'm sure it makes me sound like I'm from "up nort' der in MinneSOta," (which I'm not) but I like it!

@ Otter Thomas - Screw 'em! This can be the ANTI-Hallmark holiday! Everyone is always griping about Hallmark holidays and how fake they are...I think they would jump at the chance to "stick it to the man."

Of course with our luck, Hallmark would figure out how to market a non-card card.

@ Bella Daddy - hahaha...that's probably where the idea originated from - we're just slow to catch on. :)

@ Rob - I'm certainly going to be a "fan favorite" with all the wives/significant others. I think I hear an angry mob at my door...excuse me...

@ Busy-Dad-E - BAHAHAHAHA! Genius idea. :)

@ dearmisterman - Well, if she's doesn't know and doesn't provide the 'nightcap' to the holiday, at least you had one AWESOME dinner (grilled porterhouse...mmmm...)
